Иногда утверждают, что происхождение этого выражения связано с блестящими способностями защитника, которые проявил А. Гамильтон [ Hamilton, Alexander] в деле Зенгера [ Zenger trial] (1835) (однако это объяснение скорее всего относится к числу исторических легенд).
